First stage of our Vélodyssée in Charente Maritime: Marans, in the heart of the Marais poitevin. We attach our bikes, here, it is on the water that we move. After having muscled our legs by riding several hundred kilometers of bike paths, it’s time to work our arms by rowing!
Vélodyssée in Charente Maritime : our stop in Châtelaillon !
Day 1: Discovery of the marshes
This little green break is more than welcome, we needed to breathe a little! Along the water, we discover the Poitevin marshes, their fauna and their flora. Swans, kingfishers and dragonflies accompany us along our escapade on the water.
It is magical!
This escapade has done us a lot of good, it’s time to get back on the road! Before attaching our helmets and leaving, we ask one of the boatmen of the marsh for some advice. Looking for a place by the sea to rest for a few days, he recommends Chatelaillon. Let’s go !
Day 2: Along the Atlantic coast
We follow the recommendations of this sailor from Charente and look for a place to spend the night. It is decided, for us it will be the campsite! There is a very good one at Les Boucholeurs, the Port Punay campsite… cyclists are welcome and the owner’s wife is Dutch, a cycling enthusiast surely.
On the road, we cross La Rochelle and we stop a few minutes to taste a caramel ice cream on the port. Invigorated by this sweetness, we attack the last kilometers.
The section, along the coast, linking La Rochelle to Chatelaillon is superb! We can already see the city in the distance. Just before arriving at the port, we can’t resist to stop at a very nice beach lined with huts : the port of Plomb in Angoulins. This Vélodyssée in Charente Maritime is definitely full of surprises !
Day 3: A well-deserved break in Chatelaillon
Finally we arrive at our destination for a well-deserved rest! After putting our bikes on the promenade of Chatelaillon, we run to relax our legs in the water.
This swim has dug our appetite, so much the better, the terrace of the Bugatti and its salads are holding out their arms to us. We take advantage of this gourmet break to have our bikes’ tires re-inflated at Good Bikes, bike rental and repair shop, located just behind the Casino.
Our mounts as new and our appetite filled, it is time for us to discover Chatelaillon and its surroundings. We ride along the sea, between the port and the boucholeurs, the sea spray comes to refresh our face. Arriving in the charming village of Boucholeurs, our progress is stopped by a tractor of oyster farmers filled with bags of oysters. We have just had lunch and yet the sight of these seafood makes us salivate! We know what we are going to eat this evening!
Upon arrival at Port Punay Campground, we are greeted by Morgan and Angelique with a big smile. Nestled in the heart of the village and in the middle of nature, the campsite is perfect to rest. We spend the late afternoon in the campsite’s wellness area and the evening on the terrace of Saveurs Nacrées to enjoy a seafood platter with a view on the bay. The sun is setting and we enjoy the moment before leaving in a few days to Royan, the last stage of our Vélodyssée in Charente Maritime.
