At a time when land-based cannons did not reach far enough, Fort Boyard was built to protect the Charente estuary, the Isle of Aix and Rochefort from attack by enemy ships.
However, advances in artillery outpaced its construction, and rendered it useless from a military point of view when completed. It was eventually converted and used as a prison.
Listed as a "Historic Monument", it is now known throughout the world for the famous game show, filmed on site since 1990.
